Our Story
We started differently from most brands.
For almost 40 years, before there was The Leather Garden, there was simply the work. We made bags for other names, learning leather through years of doing. How it behaves, what it can become, and the difference attention makes.
Then, in 2018, those years became our own.
The Leather Garden grew from those years of experience, and a desire to do things our way.
We stayed with leather, but looked at it differently. Rooted in Indian craft, we brought techniques from textiles and metal onto leather, creating a way of working that became distinctly our own.
Material & Craft
None of this happens without the people who make it.
Crafts like Zardozi and Dabka take years to learn. Passed from one generation to the next, much of that knowledge lives in the hands of the people who practise them. We work with karigars who bring that knowledge to our leather.
Working with leather is different.
A technique that works beautifully on fabric doesn't always translate directly, so there is a lot of figuring things out along the way. That time is what gives each piece its individuality.
The crafts are old. The way we use them is ours. We make pieces to be used, carried and travelled with until they become more personal over time.
For us, that is what an heirloom should be.
“Even now, there’s usually a vase waiting on the table when I get home.”
For Neeharika, the love of fresh flowers goes back to childhood. There is almost always a small bunch around the house. Rajnigandhas from the neighbourhood florist, hydrangeas from the mandi, or simply whatever catches her eye that day. She likes bringing them home and finding a place for them.
Maybe that is where The Leather Garden really began.
There has always been something about the way a garden comes together that feels familiar to her. Things are added, moved around, changed, and sometimes left just as they are. Over time, it becomes a reflection of the person who tends to it.
The Leather Garden has grown in much the same way. It has grown through curiosity, instinct, and a desire to keep exploring what leather can be.
Collaborations
We’re drawn to collaborations with people and brands who value craft as much as we do. If that sounds like you, we’d love to start a conversation at info@theleathergarden.com.
